New Deans Named at Pomona College |
 |
Effective at the beginning of the 2007-2008 academic year,
Pomona College named two new deans.
Cynthia R.D. Selassie, a professor of chemistry, was named
Associate Dean of the College, with a primary focus on
faculty research and sabbaticals. Her duties also include:
working with several Pomona committees including Research,
Sustainability and Building and Grounds; administering
short-term faculty space issues; working on the renovation
of the Seaver South building; construction of the physics
playground; and supervising several department budgets.
A member of the Pomona faculty since 1980, Selassie has
taught medicinal chemistry and organic chemistry. She has
twice been awarded the Wig Distinguished Professorship Award
for Excellence in Teaching. She has also published more than
50 articles, garnered numerous grants for her research in
medicinal chemistry, and chaired her department for six
years. A leader in faculty governance, Selassie served on
the Presidential Search Committee in 2002-03 and currently
sits on the Executive Committee. She is a magna cum laude
graduate of Mount St. Mary's College and later earned a
master's degree at Duke and a doctorate at USC.
Marcelle Christian Holmes was named Interim Associate Dean
of Students and Dean of Women at Pomona, effective July 1,
2007. As Associate Dean of Students,
she is the general academic advisor for students and serves
as the College's coordinator for disability accommodations
for students. As Dean of Women, she
supervises the Women's Union and coordinates the Women's
Union Thursday Noon Discussion Series.
Holmes first came to Pomona College in 2001, as a jointly
appointed assistant professor of Psychology and Black
Studies. During her time at the College,
Holmes was awarded an Irvine Distinguished Faculty
Fellowship for Student Mentoring and served the college on a
number of committees, including the Presidential Task Force
for Health and Fitness in 2006 and the Women's Commission. A
licensed psychologist in private practice, she served as a
senior staff member at the Claremont Colleges Monsour
Counseling and Psychological Services this past year. A Phi
Beta Kappa graduate from Vassar College, she received her
Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of
Michigan.
Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts
