Pomona
College Faculty Members Recognized With Endowed
Professorships

Three Pomona College faculty members have been recognized
for their outstanding teaching and commitment to research
and artistic endeavors with appointments to endowed
professorships. Four additional faculty promoted, effective
July 2006.
Thomas Flaherty was appointed to the John P. and Magdalena
R. Dexter Professorship in Music. A member of the faculty
since 1989, he is an accomplished composer and cellist whose
most recent album, The Music of Tom Flaherty, was
released by Bridge Records, Inc. in 2005. His expertise is
in 20th century music and history, as well as electronic
music. He received his B.A. from Brandeis University, his
M.A. and M.M. from the State University of New York, Stony
Brook, and his D.M.A. from the University of Southern
California.
Erica Flapan was appointed to the Lingurn H. Burkhead
Professorship in Mathematics. Flapan’s research interests
include 3-manifolds, knot theory, the topology of embedded
graphs, and topological chemistry. In her 20 years at
Pomona, Flapan has worked to engage students through an
interactive approach to math. She has been a valuable mentor
to many, and in 2005 received an Irvine Foundation award for
mentoring students of color at Pomona. She received her B.A.
from Hamilton College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the
University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Associate Dean Kenneth Wolf, who has taught at the College
since 1985, has been appointed to the John Sutton Minor
Professorship in History. A four-time recipient of the Wig
Distinguished Professor Award, he is an expert on early
medieval Spain, Christian views of Islam, and the complex
ideas of sanctity. He received a National Endowment for the
Humanities Fellowship for 2004-2005. In 2003 his book The
Poverty of Riches: St. Francis of Assisi Reconsidered
was published by Oxford University Press. In 2005, his
translation of The Deeds of Count Roger of Calabria and
Sicily and of His Brother Duke Robert Guiscard was
published by the University of Michigan Press. He received
his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Four additional faculty members received promotions. Zhiru
Ng, assistant professor of Religious Studies, was promoted
to associate professor with tenure. Valerie Cowan, assistant
professor of Physical Education and the head volleyball
coach, was promoted to associate professor. Ann Lebedeff,
associate professor of Physical Education and the Women’s
Tennis coach, was promoted to professor. Grace Dávila-López
was promoted from Adjunct Associate Professor of Romance
Languages and Literatures to Adjunct Professor.
