China's
Economic and Diplomatic Resurgence is Subject of Lecture
at Pomona College |
 |
Akio Kawato, veteran Japanese diplomat and chief economist
at the Research Institute of Capital Formation at the
Development Bank of Japan, will discuss China’s resurgence
and it’s influence on all Asian politics and societies – as
well as its immense economic, political and strategic impact
on the U.S. on Thursday, September 29. The lecture is
sponsored by the Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College.
China’s international profile has risen dramatically in
recent years, both as an economic force and as host and a
key player in the six-party talks with North Korea, South
Korea, the U.S., Japan and Russia aimed at prodding the Kim
Jong-Il regime to give up its nuclear weapons program.
Prior to joining the Development Bank of Japan, Kawato
worked for more than 30 years in Japan’s Foreign Ministry.
Among his many positions, he served as Head of the Eastern
Europe Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
Japan, Consul-General of Japan in Boston and as the Minister
of the Embassy of Japan in Russia.
In this lecture, entitled “How China Changed Asia: The View
from Japan,” Kawato will advocate retaining the U.S./Japan
alliance and explain the necessity of that alliance to be
connected with a multilateral Asian security network, with
China also playing a significant role.
This lecture, which is open to the public, will begin at
4:15 p.m. and be held in the Hahn Building (Room 101, 420 N.
Harvard Avenue, Claremont). For more information, call (909)
607-8065.
The Pacific Basin Institute is dedicated to expanding and
enhancing comity and shared knowledge among the nations and
