“Martyrdom, Persecution, Politics” is Subject of Religion Lecture Series at Pomona College |
 |
“Martyrdom, Persecution, Politics: Political Afterlives of
the Early Christian Tradition of Martyrdom,” is the subject
of The Clark Horowitz Lectures in Religion—an annual series
at Pomona College. Elizabeth A. Castelli, professor of
religion at Barnard College, will deliver these lectures on
Tuesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, October 11th at 11 a.m.
Castelli, a specialist in biblical studies, early
Christianity and feminist/gender studies in religion, will
examine the historical tradition of martyrdom,
the ways in which this tradition's focus on witnessing comes
into Catholic anti-war activism today, and the current
perception by some conservative Christian
groups that there is a cultural war against Christians.
Castelli’s most recent book is Martyrdom and Memory:
Early Christian Culture Making (Columbia, 2004).
The lecture schedule is as follows:
Tues., Oct. 9
‘When You See Blood, It Brings Truth’: Catholic Ritual and
Resistance in a Time of War
Thurs., Oct. 11
Persecution Complexes and the ‘War on Christians’
Both lectures will be held at the Rose Hills Theater (Pomona
College, Smith Campus Center, 170 E. Sixth St., Claremont).

The Clark Horowitz Lectures in Religion are a time-honored
tradition at Pomona College, dating back to 1924 when a gift
by Arthur O. and Laura Clark of
Covina, California, made possible an annual series of Clark
Lectures in Religion, the first of which was held in 1926.
Mr. David Horowitz, class of 1973, has
enabled this tradition to continue, with a more recent gift
in 1999. Distinguished speakers in this series have included
Jonathan Z. Smith, Wendy Doniger,
James Barr, Anne-Marie Schimmel, Robert Gibbs and Vincent
Cornell, among others.
