“Hollywood Left and Right: How Movie Stars Shaped American Politics”—Lecture at Pomona College |
 |
Steven Ross, professor of history at the University of
Southern California, will deliver a lecture titled,
“Hollywood Left and Right: How Movie Stars Shaped American
Politics,” as part of The Hart Institute for American
History’s 2007-08 Lecture Series at Pomona College. The
lecture will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m.
and is the first in this year’s series on American film.
In his forthcoming project of the same name, Hollywood Left
and Right: How Movie Stars Shaped American Politics (Oxford
University Press), Ross discusses the
fast approaching election year and the mounting presidential
campaigns’ courtship of celebrities. He examines the
emergence of Hollywood as a major center of
American politics and the role star power has played in the
political life of the nation from the beginning of the 20th
century to the present.
His previous books include Movies and American Society
(Blackwell Publishers, 2002) and Working-Class Hollywood:
Silent Film and the Shaping of Class in
America (Princeton University Press, 1998).
The lecture will be held in the Rose Hills Theatre (Smith
Campus Center, 170 E. Sixth St., Claremont) at Pomona
College. For further information call: (909) 607-9435.
The Hart Institute for American History was established at
Pomona College in 2000. The institute’s purpose is to ground
the study of broad and abiding themes in American history in
the close reading of primary documents, a term defined
broadly to include such sources as photographs, music,
material culture, and literary works, as well as traditional
historical sources. . |
