Festival Strings 50th Anniversary Tour Comes to Pomona
College

The Lucerne Festival Strings, which was awarded the Hansen
Memorial Visiting Artist Residency for 2006-2007, is
celebrating its 50th anniversary with a tour of the U.S. and
Mexico. The anniversary concert includes a concert at Pomona
College on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 8 p.m.
Established in 1956 by Wolfgang Schneiderhan and Rudolf
Baumgartner, the renowned chamber orchestra from Switzerland
regularly performs in European music centers and tours
extensively throughout the world. The Lucerne Festival
Strings appears at such prominent festivals such as Ankara,
Prague, Eisenstadt, Ludwigsburg and Rheingau.
At home, the orchestra can be heard annually at the Lucerne
Festival as well as its own concert series. The chamber
orchestra, which is the Lucerne Academy of Music's “Ensemble
in Residence,” has been directed by Achim Fiedler since
1998.
The concert will be held in Bridges Hall of Music (150 E.
4th Street), and the orchestra, under the direction of
Fiedler, will present music by Bach (“Contrapunctus no. I
and IV” from “The Art of Fugue BWV 1080” and “Ricercar a sei
voci” from “Musical Offering BWV 1079”), Haydn (“Concerto
for violin and orchestra in C major Hob. Vlla.:1”),
Shostakovich (“String Quartet no.8 in C minor op.110”), and
Stravinsky (“Concerto in D for string orchestra”).
