Pomona College Student Union Debates America’s Role in the World
The Pomona Student Union will host two renowned foreign policy experts, John Mearsheimer and Jonathan Schell, for “The Great Debate: America’s Role in the World,” a discussion of the future of U.S. foreign policy in a post-Iraq era. This event will be held on Thursday, October 5th, at 7 p.m. at Pomona College.

Mearsheimer was recently ranked as the fifth most influential international relations theorist in the past 20 years. Mearsheimer is the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of political science at the University of Chicago. He is the author of  Conventional Deterrence, Nuclear Deterrence: Ethics and Strategy, Liddell Hart and the Weight of History, and The Tragedy of Great Power Politics. Mearsheimer is a leading proponent of neo-realism, a philosophy that has informed the opinions of such famous realpolitik policymakers as Henry Kissinger and George Kennan.

Schell is a professor at Wesleyan University and the New School and is the Harold Willens Peace Fellow at The Nation Institute. He has been awarded numerous awards for his foreign policy scholarship, including the MacArthur “Genius” Grant for his writing on peace and security. Schell is The Nation's peace and disarmament correspondent, and the author of The Unconquerable World: Power, Nonviolence, The Will of the People and A Hole in the World, a compilation of his "Letter From Ground Zero" columns, published by Nation Books.

This event will be held in Edmunds Ballroom (Smith Campus Center, 170 E. Sixth Street). For more information visit http://www.pomonasu.com.
