Pomona College Theatre Presents Arcadia by Tom Stoppard

Tom Stoppard‘s play, Arcadia, will be performed this week by the Department of Theatre and Dance at Pomona College. There will be an open preview at 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening, October 4th, with subsequent performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, Oct. 5th – Oct. 7th at 8 p.m., and matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7th and 8 at 2 p.m.

Arcadia is an astonishing journey of a play, combining the comedy of the moment with the conventions of the English 18th Century drawing-room—and the risks and uncertainties of literary and scientific discovery with the irreversible tragedy of fate and chance. Stoppard moves the action seamlessly from 1809 Derbyshire to the present—exploring the worlds of English Romanticism, determinism, landscape architecture, higher mathematics, chaos theories, the creative individuality of genius and the very nature of truth and time—all with great perception and wit.

Directed by Art Horowitz (Pomona College professor of theatre), tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students, staff and senior citizens. The theatre box office is open from 11 a.m. -4 p.m., Monday-Friday. The play will be held at the Pomona College Seaver Theatre (300 E. Bonita Way). For further information call (909) 621-8525 or (909) 607-4375.

The Pomona College Department of Theatre & Dance is the only five-college theatre department in the world. Serving Pomona College, Pitzer College, Scripps College, Harvey Mudd College, and Claremont McKenna College, it offers theoretical and practical work in all phases of theatre and dance, within the context of a rigorous liberal arts education. In addition to its academic offerings, it produces a variety of plays and an annual dance concert. The plays selected include classics old and new, contemporary plays and experimental pieces. The productions offer opportunities in performance, design and technical work to all interested students of the Claremont Colleges.
