Pomona College Theatre Presents “Melancholy Play” by Sarah Ruhl—Pulitzer Prize Finalist |
 |
The Pomona College Department of Theatre & Dance and Theatre
for the Claremont Colleges present Pulitzer Prize Finalist
Sarah Ruhl’s, Melancholy Play.
Performances are Oct. 11-13 at 8 p.m., and Oct. 13 & 14 at 2
p.m.
In Melancholy Play a group of cheerful Americans living in
Illinois, content with their lives and comfortable positions
in society, are shaken up by a mysterious, beautiful and
inexplicably melancholic young woman. Melancholy Play is
described by critics as “iconic and cinematic, bold,
outward, sassy, sexy and unashamed…a contemporary farce… a
sincere melodrama.” Cellist (and Pomona College math
professor) Ami Radunskaya will perform music by Michael
Friedman and provide additional original music.
In 2006 Ruhl was named a MacArthur Fellow. Her play, The
Clean House, was a Pulitzer Prize contender in 2005 and won
the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn
Prize in 2004. Her plays tackle life, death, religion and
politics and have been produced throughout the U.S. and
Europe at such venues as the Lincoln Center Theater (New
York), the Actor’s Centre (London), the Goodman Theatre
(Chicago), and the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, among many
others.
The play will be held in the Allen Studio Theatre, located
in the Seaver Theatre Complex (300 E. Bonita Ave.,
Claremont) at Pomona College.
Directed by Betty Bernhard, Pomona College professor of
theatre, ticket prices are $5 for faculty, staff, seniors &
students and $10.00 for general admission. For further
