Car-Sharing Comes to the Claremont Colleges |
 |
Car-sharing has come to the Claremont Colleges. Operated by
Flexcar, the planet-friendly program will bring three Honda
Civic hybrid cars (50 mpg) and one low-emission Honda
Odyssey van to the Colleges where they can be rented by
qualified students, faculty and staff for both business and
personal use.
Pomona College is subsidizing the program for all of the
campuses, so that students, faculty and staff can rent one
of the vehicles for $7 per hour or $48 per day, including
gas, insurance, maintenance, 150 miles per trip, and 24/7
emergency service. Reservations can be made online up to 364
days in advance.
“We want our students to be more engaged with the local
communities, and public transportation is not enough.
Flexcar will allow our students to take full advantage of
internships, volunteer activities, the On the Loose program
and other wonderful experiences that enhance student
learning off-campus,” explained Pomona College Dean of
Students Miriam Feldblum.
To help students participate in a wider range of internships
and community service projects, Pomona College will cover
car rental costs for Pomona students using a Flexcar vehicle
to travel between campus and internships or community
service projects arranged through the College. The Flexcar
program will also support faculty and staff use of public
transportation.
The cars are available for students 18-years-old and older,
faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges. The Flexcar
application fee of $35 is being waived until January 7,
2008. The cars are parked in the Claremont University
Consortium parking lot near the Tranquada Student Services
Building on the corner of 8th St. and Dartmouth Ave. For
further information visit

Pomona College students, faculty and staff and Claremont
University Consortium staff who join through a department or
program will receive a free personal membership. Personal
memberships are available for people associated with
Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Scripps
College, Claremont Graduate University and the Keck Graduate
Institute while Flexcar works with those campuses to
finalize business relationships.
Flexcar programs are available on more than 30 college
campuses across the country, with the addition of The
Claremont Colleges, as well as cities throughout the U.S.
Founded in 1999, Flexcar has received a number of awards.
Among the more recent are the 2007 Top “Eco-marketer” award
presented by Advertising Age Magazine for its “outstanding
job of integrating environmental sustainability into its
brand DNA,” and the 2005 Top Brand With A Conscience awards,
as one of eight top “global brands that merge profits with
humanity and ethics,” presented by The Medinge Group, an
international think tank.
The original proposal to bring a car-sharing program to
Pomona College came from current Pomona students Jennifer
Wilcox ‘08, Jacob Ziemann ‘08, Drew Olian ‘08, Daniel Scinto
‘09, and Jed Cullen ’10; and Claremont McKenna College
student Priya Wad‘09. They are all members of the Claremont
Consulting Group, which provides consulting services to a
variety of organizations and industries. |
