Pomona
College Ranked the Best Value Among Liberal Arts
Colleges |
 |
Pomona College has been named the “Best Value” among liberal
arts colleges for the second year in a row by Kiplinger’s
Personal Finance Magazine. In its December 2009 edition, the
magazine listed the top 100 “Best Values in Private
Colleges,” ranking them according to academic quality and
affordability—with quality accounting for two-thirds of the
total. Affordability measures considered included “the price
of attending” as well as “generosity when it comes to
financial aid.”
“This year’s top 100 private schools met the challenges of a
slumping economy with brio,” says Janet Bodnar, editor of
Kiplinger’s. “With so many private institutions offering
generous financial aid packages, families are finding that
private college is still affordable. In fact, the average
tuition price can be as little as half or less of the
sticker price—making them very competitive with public
universities.”
In the accompanying article, Kiplinger reporter Jane Bennett
Clark writes that despite rough economic times, “independent
colleges boosted financial aid by 9% while keeping tuition
increases – an average of 4.3% -- to their lowest levels in
four decades.”
Pomona was noted as providing “its students with a
top-quality education in a setting that snowbound Ivy
Leaguers can only dream of. This small school, with some
1,500 students, faces the stunning San Gabriel Mountains and
basks in the Southern California sun. Almost all of its
freshmen return for sophomore year, a sure sign of happy
campers, and 90% of its seniors graduate on time, sparing
their parents the expense of a fifth year. As for financial
aid, if you need it, you get it.” Pomona meets the full
financial aid need of every student with a financial aid
package of scholarships and no loans.
Three of Pomona’s sister colleges in The Claremont Colleges
were also represented on the Kiplinger’s top 50 best values
among liberal arts colleges. Claremont McKenna College was
listed at no. 5, Harvey Mudd College at no. 24 and Scripps
College at no. 34.

The issue goes on sale on November 10.
Pomona College, founded in 1887, is located in Claremont,
CA, approximately 35 miles east of the City of Los Angeles.
Its hallmarks include small classes, close relationships
between students and faculty, and a range of student
research and involvement opportunities.
