Jean
Walton Memorial Service Set for October 28, 2006

A memorial service for Jean Walton, a remarkable woman who
contributed much to the life of Pomona College, will be held
on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. in Bridges Hall
of Music (150 E. Fourth St., Claremont). She died July 5,
2006 at her home in Claremont.
 Walton
arrived at Pomona in 1949 to be dean of women and later
served as dean of students, vice president for Student
Affairs, and co-founder of the Claremont Colleges
Intercollegiate Women's Studies Program. She also found time
to teach classes in mathematics and women’s studies. During
years of profound change, she helped develop a new model of
residential life and challenged students, faculty and
administrators to recognize changing gender roles. During
her career, she received both Pomona’s Wig Distinguished
Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching, in 1975, and the
1974 Scott Goodnight Award, the top award of the National
Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
Upon her retirement from Pomona in 1979, Jean served as the
first coordinator of Intercollegiate Women's Studies for the
Claremont Colleges and continued the mentorship of women
students and faculty for which she was so deeply revered.
At the time of her retirement, some of her former students
established the Jean B. Walton Scholarship Fund in her
honor, and in 1981, a new residential lounge on the Pomona
campus was named Walton Commons, in recognition of her many
years of distinguished service.
Note: Because of the Village Venture event in
Claremont on Oct. 28, traffic and parking in the vicinity
of the campus may be impacted. Campus entrances on Bonita
Avenue and on Fourth Street will be closed until 10:30 am,
but those attending the memorial service for Jean Walton
will be granted access by the Campus Safety officers who
will staff the barricades at those intersections. This
should assure that ample parking will be available on
campus. |
