Pomona College to Screen Film on Islam and Southeast Asia

The Pacific Basin Institute of Pomona College will screen a film “Bagong Buwan (New Moon)” on Saturday, October 22 at 10 a.m. and again on Thursday, October 27 at 2:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion at 4:15 p.m. Thursday on “Islam in Southeast Asia: Threat or Opportunity for Democracy?”

“Bagong Buwan (New Moon)” is a feature film from the Philippines about a long and dangerous search for peace amidst heated struggles between Muslims and Christians—a quest for a place where people of different faiths and cultures can live together in solidarity.

The first film screening will be held in Rose Hills Theater (Smith Campus Center, 170 E. 6th Street, Claremont) and the second screening will be held in the Hahn Building (Room 101, 420 Harvard Ave., Claremont). Call (909) 607-8065 for further information.

American policy discussions about Islam and democracy tend to ignore Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Malaysia — predominantly Muslim countries that are working, if flawed, democracies. If moderate Islam and the West want to take a stand against fanatical jihadists, Southeast Asia is the place to start. The Pacific Basin Institute President Frank Gibney (Pomona College professor of politics) will lead the panel discussion, featuring Pomona College professors Stephen Marks (economics), Tahir Andrabi (economics) and Boots Pascual (theater and dance).

The Pacific Basin Institute is dedicated to expanding and enhancing comity and shared knowledge among the nations and cultures that face the Pacific. A valued study, media production and research center for the distinguished, PBI also offers books, film series and lecture programs to a general as well as academic audience. Since the turn of the past century Pomona College has been a leader in Asian Studies among American universities. Visit Pomona College on the web at www.pomona.edu.
