“Japan’s
Changing International Role”: Lecture by Dr. Masahiro
Kohara At Pomona College |

Dr. Masahiro Kohara, vice-consul general at the Japanese
Consulate in Los Angeles, will give a talk on “Japan’s
Changing International Role” at Pomona College, on Thursday,
Oct. 26, at 4:15 p.m.
The lecture will delve into Japan’s view on China and
India’s rising power, explore the meanings of North Korea’s
nuclear testing for Japan and the East Asian region,
summarize the state of the US-Japan alliance, and examine
Japan’s growing international role. Ultimately, this talk
aims to connect current events to how Japan plans to improve
its role as a promoter of peace and economic prosperity.
Dr. Kohara has served in Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
for over twenty-five years. His roles have included director
of the Bureaus of Asian and Pacific Affairs, and Economic
Cooperation. He has also participated in missions in China
and the United Nations headquarters in New York and served
as a visiting professor at universities in Japan.
Dr. Kohara’s lecture will be held in room 108 of the Pomona
College Hahn building (420 Harvard Avenue, Claremont). This
lecture is sponsored by the Pacific Basin Institute at
Pomona College and the Pomona College Asian American Studies
