Michael
Armacost to Lecture on U.S. Policy in North East Asia,
At Pomona College |
 |
Michael Armacost, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan and to the
Republic of the Philippines, will deliver the Pomona College
R. Stanton Avery lecture, “North East Asia: Where Does the
U.S. Stand? Where Are We Going?” on Tuesday, November 7 at 8
p.m. at the Rose Hills Theater (Smith Campus Center, 170 E.
6th St., Claremont). For further information, contact the
Pacific Basin Institute: (909) 607-8065.
North Korea presented grave challenges to her neighbors, to
the U.S. and to the world community, even before the threat
of nuclear capability. At the same time, the Russian Far
East's vast oil and gas reserves are sparking heated
controversies among multinational oil companies. Those firms
also are struggling with indigenous peoples, Russian
nationalism, the Russian government, and the Chinese oil
seekers.
Armacost will explore these issues and offer insights and
proposals based on his extensive experiences as a senior
Foreign Service officer and a senior official in the
Department of Defense. Armacost, now Distinguished Fellow at
The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center,
Stanford University, currently is working on a book focusing
on the influence of war on U.S. foreign policy.
Armacost will discuss United States policy in North East
Asia, describing it as undirected and unfocused, not to say
indifferent. He will raise pertinent questions about
American concerns in the region, discuss the legitimate
objectives U.S. firms and the U.S. Government have in the
region, and address which countries and regions present us
with the major challenges— aside from North Korea— and with
whom we have dialogue and shares our objectives.
The Pacific Basin Institute is dedicated to expanding and
enhancing comity and shared knowledge among the nations and
cultures that face the Pacific. A valued study, media
production and research center for the distinguished, PBI
also offers books, film series and lecture programs to a
general as well as academic audience. Since the turn of the
past century Pomona College has been a leader in Asian
Studies among American universities. Visit Pomona College on
