Southern California A Cappella Festival Slated for Nov. 3 at Pomona College

Showcasing the best of collegiate a cappella music, the 11th annual SCAMfest (formerly the Southern California A Cappella Music Festival) will be held at Pomona College on Friday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will feature nine groups vocalizing without instruments. Representing the Claremont Colleges are the Claremont Shades, the event hosts; MoodSwing; Midnight Echo; Men's Blue and White; Women's Blue and White; and After School Specials. Visiting groups include USC’s SoCal VoCals, the USC Sirens, the UCLA ScatterTones and the Whitman College Testostertones.

The Claremont Shades, which will be releasing their new album “Random Play” at SCAMfest, have been featured on the BOCA (Best of College A Cappella) compilation CD and was nominated to the International Championship of A Cappella (ICCA) Berkeley competition this year. SoCal VoCals placed second in the ICCA’s February Western Regionals.

Reflecting the soaring popularity of college a cappella, more than 1000 people typically attend SCAMfest. At the Claremont Colleges, more than 80 students participate in a cappella groups and more would like to join. At its most recent audition, the Claremont Shades auditioned 45 students but was only able to add seven new members.

Tickets for the event are $5 and may be purchased at the door. SCAMfest will be held at Bridges Auditorium on the Pomona College campus (450 N. College Way, Claremont). For more information, contact: Marjorie Gomez, president of the Claremont Shades, at marjorie.gomez@pomona.edu.

Pomona College, established in 1887, is the founding member of the Claremont Colleges. The consortium of independent colleges also includes Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Scripps College, Claremont Graduate University and the Keck Graduate Institute.
