Pomona
College Professor Receives National Credit Union
Achievement Award |
 |
Pomona College Professor James D. Likens has been selected
to receive the 2005 Herb Wegner Memorial Lifetime
Achievement Award, sponsored by the National Credit Union
Foundation. The award is the highest national honor
available in the credit union industry.
Since 1972, Likens has served as President and Dean of
Western CUNA Management School (WCMS), a premiere credit
union executive development program held at the Pomona
College campus. Approximately 400 people attend the
management training each year. Graduates of the three-year
program have moved into leadership positions at some of the
nation’s leading credit unions.
In addition to his work for WCMS, Likens is the long time
chairman of the Board of First City Credit Union, which
operates across Los Angeles County; the founder and editor
of a publication created to disseminate ideas and promote
research for the advancement of the credit union movement;
and has served on the founding board of directors of the
California Credit Union Share Guaranty Corporation.
In announcing its selection, the National Credit Union
Foundation noted Likens’ many achievements throughout his
credit union career. “He not only designs and develops the
curriculum of WCMS, he speaks out forthrightly for credit
unions in his teaching, lobbying, writing and consulting,
and has served as an expert witness in significant credit
union court cases. Through WCMS, he has enhanced the lives
of thousands of credit union professionals and advanced the
progress of their credit unions."
David L. Chatfield, president and CEO of the California
Credit Union League and the 1997 recipient of the Herb
Wegner Award, noted that Likens had received his
organization’s highest honor, the Leo H. Shapiro Lifetime
Achievement Award, three years ago. “We're proud to see him
likewise recognized nationally by his peers for his decades
of hard work on behalf of credit unions and their members,"
Chatfield said.
At Pomona College, Likens is the Morris B. and Gladys E.
Pendleton Professor of Economics. His courses include
Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics,
Microeconomic Theory, Industrial Organization, Labor
Economics and a senior seminar on corporate strategy. He
holds both a B.A. degree in economics and an M.B.A. from U.C.
Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of
Minnesota.
The Wegner Award will be presented Sunday, February 27,
2005, at the Foundation’s Herb Wegner Memorial Awards
Dinner, during Credit Union National Association's
Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C. The
award is named in tribute to the late Credit Union National
Association chief executive officer, Herb Wegner, and
recognizes his spirit of “innovative, creative, risk-taking”
leadership. |
