American
Star on Chinese Television to Speak at Pomona College |
 |
Rachel DeWoskin starred on Chinese primetime television as
the American vixen, Jiexii, a sultry “foreign babe” in love
with Chinese culture and Chinese men. Her experiences
on-screen gave her behind-the-scenes insights into the
attitudes and lives of the modern Chinese and the ways in
which China and America view and portray each other.
DeWoskin will share her experiences in a talk at Pomona
College on Thursday, November 10, at 4:15 p.m.
DeWoskin, the author of Foreign Babes in Beijing, was
21 when she went to China in 1994 to pursue her Chinese
studies. Two years after the Tienanmen Square crackdown,
Beijing was awash with brand names, discos, divorces,
cosmetic surgery, and cross-cultural dating, transforming
the face of China’s capital. It was in this cultural moment
that DeWoskin became a Chinese TV star.
DeWoskin has also published work in publications such as
The Boston Globe, Ploughshares and Seneca
Review. She won an American Academy of Poets Award in
2000 and is the associate poetry editor at Agni Magazine,
an acclaimed literary magazine published at Boston
University.
This lecture, sponsored by the Pacific Basin Institute at
Pomona College, will be held in the Hahn Building, Room 101
