Cell Research, it’s Ethical and Political Implications,
Subject of Debate at Pomona College
|
 |
The Pomona Student Union at Pomona College will present a
debate by leading experts on the ethical and political
implications of expanded stem cell research on Thursday,
November 17, at 8 p.m.
The two participants are nationally recognized experts on
bioethics and stem cell policy:
• Hank T. Greely is a professor at Stanford University
School of Law specializing in bioscience ethics and law. At
Stanford he is the director of the Center for Law and
Biosciences and co-director of the Program on Genomics,
Ethics, and Society. He also serves as the ethics chair for
the Human Genome Diversity Project and is the chair of the
Steering Committee for the Stanford Center for Biomedical
Ethics.
• Wesley J. Smith is an attorney and the author of 11 books,
most recently a Consumer’s Guide to a Brave New World
(2004) and Culture of Death: The Assault on Medical
Ethics in America (2002). He is an international public
speaker and is a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute.
His writing and opinion columns have appeared in Newsweek,
the New York Times, the Wall
Street Journal and National Review.
He is a special consultant to the Center for Bioethics and
Culture. National Journal named Smith one of the nation’s
top thinkers in bioengineering because of his work on
bioethics.
The debate is sponsored by the Pomona Student Union, a
non-partisan student organization dedicated to "raising the
level of honest and open dialogue on campus. By helping
students become more knowledgeable and better informed on
the political and social issues that confront our society,
we create informed citizens to better serve us all.” In
addition to bringing in speakers, the Pomona Student Union
sponsors student and faculty debates and panels, as well as
informal social events structured around current events.
The event is open to the public and will be held in Pomona
College Smith Campus Center, Edmunds Ballroom, 170 E. Sixth
St., Claremont. There is no charge to attend. For more
information, call (909) 607-6622.
