Korean
Consul General Youn-Bok Lee To Speak at Pomona College |
 |
Korean Counsul General Youn-Bok Lee, who has more than 20
years of experience in diplomacy, will speak on “Korea's
Dynamic Development and Its Implications” on Friday, January
27, from noon to 1:00 p.m. at Pomona College in Claremont.
According to Lee, in order to understand Korean society
today, it is important to look to the younger generation.
Recalling the past century, many things in Korea have
changed. The end of the Choson Dynasty, liberation from
Japan, the division of the Korean Peninsula, the Korean War,
industrialization and dictatorship, democratization, the
financial crisis of 1997, the technology revolution, and
other events have all had a huge impact on their respective
generations. Koreans in their 30s and 40s have been
fortunate enough to live in the times of industrialization
and democratization. They also have had to shoulder much of
the responsibility for restructuring the nation post-IMF;
they are also at the forefront of the technology revolution.
Today, this younger generation is participating in the
decision-making process, becoming civic leaders and
politicians, thus playing a major role in the ever-changing
dynamic Korea.
Lee has served as consul general of the Consulate General in
Los Angeles since May 2003. He previously served as vice
consul in San Francisco; Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland,
the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the State of Kuwait;
and counselor at embassies in Indonesia, The Netherlands,
and Uganda. From 2002 to 2003, he served as dean of
education and training of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’
Institute of Foreign Affairs.
The Pomona College event is open to the public and includes
lunch. The lecture will be held at the Pomona College
Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages & International
Relations (350 N. College Way, Claremont) and is
co-sponsored by the Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona
College and the College’s Oldenborg Center. For more
information, contact 909/607-8065 or 607-1159. For more
