R.
Carlton Seaver Named to Pomona College Board of Trustees |
 |
R. Carlton Seaver, a partner in the Los Angeles firm of
Seaver & Gill, LLP, has been elected to the Pomona College
Board of Trustees. Pomona College, founded in 1887 in
Claremont, California, is one of the nation’s premier
liberal arts colleges.
A member of the California State Bar, Seaver practices in
the areas of business law, civil litigation, probate and
trust, and estate planning, and is admitted to practice
before the U.S. Supreme Court and U.S. Tax Court. He began
his legal career in 1975 with the firm of Sheppard, Mullin,
Richter & Hampton. Six years later, he founded the
computerized documentation service firm JURIX and served as
its president. In 1983, Seaver returned to law practice as a
partner in the firm of Baker, Ancel, Morris & Hruby.
Following eight years in private practice, he formed the
firm of Seaver & Gill in 1993.
Seaver, a 1968 cum laude graduate of Princeton University,
earned his J.D. degree from Stanford University in 1975. He
is chair of the Princeton University Annual Giving Section,
a past director of the Princeton Club of Southern California
and past president of the Stanford Law Society of Southern
California.
An active member of his community, Seaver has served as a
director of the Bishop W. Bertrand Stevens Foundations since
1995 and is a member of the Economic Round Table, Twilight
Club, Arcadia Oaks Architectural Review Board, The
California Club, Los Angeles Yacht Club, and the Valley Hunt
Club. He is also a former trustee for Flintridge Preparatory
School and served as an AYSO soccer coach. From 1968-1972,
he was an officer in the U.S. Navy stationed on destroyers.
Seaver’s membership on the Pomona Board of Trustees
continues a long and warm relationship between the college
and the Seaver family. Carlton Seaver’s father, Richard
Seaver, Class of 1943, as well as all five of Carlton’s
uncles and aunts, are Pomona graduates. His uncle, Frank
Seaver, Class of 1905, was the first president of the
Associated Student Body, a president of the Alumni
Association, and a member of the College's Board of Trustees
from 1947 until 1964. Richard Seaver served on the Board
from 1970 to 1995 and remains an honorary member.
Stewart Smith, chairman of the Board of Trustees, and a
member of the Class of 1968, noted that "The College is
extremely fortunate to have gained a trustee with Carlton’s
skills. He is not only an accomplished attorney, but he
brings important insights into higher education, from his
broad experiences with Princeton and Stanford. We are, of
course, especially grateful that Carlton's service as a
trustee will continue the long and invaluable tradition of
Seaver family leadership at Pomona College."
Among the family’s past contributions to Pomona are: funding
for the Byron Dick Seaver Theatre complex, named for his
grandfather Byron Dick Seaver, Class of 1908; the Seaver
House, built in 1900 by his great-grandparents, Pomona
Valley pioneers Carlton and Estella Seaver, which was moved
to campus where it now serves as the Alumni House; original
funding for the construction of three of the college's
science laboratory buildings and the newest technology to
equip them; and in 2002, $23.3 million, from the estate of
Frank R. Seaver, to support the renovation and expansion of
the college's Seaver Science Center. The gift was the second
largest in Pomona's history and will enable the College to
continue its tradition of excellence in science education.
The newest addition to the Science Center is named the
Richard C. Seaver Biology Building, now under construction,
to recognize his many decades of exceptional service to the
College.
A resident of Arcadia, R. Carlton Seaver is married to
attorney Laura Stern Seaver, who practices with Seaver &
Gill, LLP, in the areas of estate planning and charitable
organizations. They have three children, John Carlton,
Nicholas Christopher Edward and Katherine Sara. |
