Pomona
College Ranked #13 in Kiplinger's "Best Private College
Values" |
 |
Pomona College has been listed at #13 among the nation’s
“100 Best Private College Values” by Kiplinger’s Personal
Finance Magazine (December 2003). The magazine initially
considered a pool of 1300 private schools, and then tanked
the top 100 colleges and universities by a combination of
quality and cost components.
According to the accompanying story, “Best Values in Private
Colleges,” Kiplinger’s “looked at total cost (tuition,
mandatory fees, room and board, and estimated expenses for
books and supplies), the average cost for a student with
need after subtracting out need-based grants (but not
loans), the average cost for a students without need after
subtracting merit grants, the percentage of all financial
aid that comes from grants and the average debt accumulated
before graduation… The scoring places greater weight on
quality – which accounts for two-thirds of the final score –
than cost. The reason is simple,” say the authors Brian
Knestout and Elizabeth Kountze, “A good value isn’t
necessarily the colleges that charges the lowest price.”
While there are a number of college surveys, college
administrators were pleased that Pomona’s academic
excellence and its commitment to meeting the financial need
of all of their students were recognized in the Kiplinger
study. "I am pleased that Pomona's reputation as one of the
top liberal arts colleges in the country has been recognized
in this survey,” said David Oxtoby, president of Pomona
College. “It is also very satisfying to receive this kind of
recognition for our financial aid policies which bring the
cost of a Pomona education within the reach of the families
of all our admitted students."
Pomona College is the founding member of The Claremont
Colleges, a consortium of five independent undergraduate and
two graduate institutions. Three of Pomona’s sister schools
were also named among the top 100: Claremont McKenna College
ranked 28th, Harvey Mudd College 52nd; and Scripps College
at 76th. The California Institute of Technology was rated
#1. |
