“Sports, Men & Masculinity: A Super Bowl of Violence” Is Topic Of Lecture at Pomona College

Five days before Americans gather to watch the Super Bowl, Pomona College will host a lecture on “Sports, Men & Masculinity: A Super Bowl of Violence” by Michael Messner, the author of Taking the Field: Men, Women and Sports. Messner will discuss how the sports media provides boys and men with messages about masculinity.

The February 1 lecture will begin at 11 a.m. and be held in Pomona’s Hahn Building (Room101), 420 N. Harvard Ave., Claremont. It is the first of a five-part lecture series on “Playing the Game: Social Forces in Sports,” sponsored by the Pomona College departments of Sociology and Physical Education/Athletics. For more information, call (909) 607-3026.

Messner, well-known for his research on Super Bowl advertisement and violence, is the author of several books including Men's Lives (2004), Taking the Field: Women, Men, and Sports (2002), Paradoxes of Youth and Sport (2002), and Power at Play: Sports and the Problem of Masculinity (1995). His articles have appeared in Gender & Society, Theory & Society, Men and Masculinities and Sociology of Sport Journal. He has conducted several studies of gender in sports media for the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles and for Children Now. Messner is a professor of sociology at the University of Southern California and a past president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport.

A second lecture in February will examine “Chemistry, Performance Enhancement and the Olympics.” This lecture will be given on February 15, at 11 a.m., by Dr. Don Catlin, who runs the only drug-testing lab in the United States accredited by the International Olympic Committee.

Catlin’s lab is where the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the NFL and the NCAA send urine to be analyzed using a method called gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In the summer of 2003, Catlin 'discovered' the designer steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) in a used syringe sent anonymously, resulting in the BALCO-lab scandal that has rocked the world of sport. A UCLA associate professor of medicine and pharmacology, Catlin will talk about his research and findings, as well as the legal fallout that has resulted from his work.

The talk will be held in Pomona’s Seaver North auditorium, 645 North Colleges Ave., Claremont. It is co-sponsored by Pomona College’s departments of Chemistry and Physical Education/Athletics, and is being supported by the Hart Institute of Pomona College. For more information, call (909) 621-8429 or email kreynolds@pomona.edu.
