Three
Pomona College Students Awarded Goldwater Scholarships |
 |
Three Pomona College students – William Jeck, Kyle Lancaster
and Alice Waldron – are recipients of the Barry M. Goldwater
Scholarship for the 2004-2005 academic year.
The scholarship program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater
was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to
pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural
sciences and engineering.
All three of Pomona College’s Goldwater Scholars are
preparing for careers in the sciences and plan to earn a
Ph.D. in their respective fields. Jeck, a mathematics major
from North Carolina, is working toward a career conducting
research in the academic realm or in industry. Kyle
Lancaster, a molecular biology major from California, wants
to teach at a small, liberal arts college. Waldron, a
geology major from Illinois, plans to conduct research in
the area of geology applicable to some form of environmental
management.
The scholarships are given annually to about 300
undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States.
Goldwater Scholars are selected on the basis of academic
merit from a field of more than 1,000 students majoring in
mathematics, science and engineering who are nominated by
the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The
award covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and
board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
Of the 310 Goldwater Scholars for the 2004-2005 academic
year, 161 are men, 149 are women, and virtually all intend
to obtain a Ph.D. as their degree objective. Twenty-nine
Scholars are mathematics majors, 223 are science majors, 44
are majoring in engineering, 12 are computer science-related
majors and 2 are in other related fields.
Pomona College is one of the nation’s premier liberal arts
institutions, offering a comprehensive program in the arts,
humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Its
hallmarks include small classes, close relationships between
students and faculty, and a range of opportunities for
student research. Visit Pomona College on the web at
