Pomona
College to hold 111th Commencement |
 |
Approximately 400 members of the class of 2004 will receive
their undergraduate degrees in Pomona College’s 111th Annual
Commencement Exercises at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, in
Bridges Auditorium (Big Bridges), 450 N. College Way,
Claremont.
Delivering the keynote address is respected veteran newsman
Walter Cronkite. Cronkite is the former CBS Evening News
anchorman whose commentary defined issues and events in
America for almost two decades. Once named the "most trusted
figure" in American public life, Cronkite often saw every
nuance in his nightly newscasts scrutinized by politicians,
intellectuals and fellow journalists for clues to the
thinking of mainstream America. His legacy of separating
reporting from advocacy has become the norm in television
news, and his name has become synonymous with the position
of news anchor in some parts of the world – Swedish anchors
are known as Kronkiters, and in Holland they are Cronkiters.
Additional commencement speakers include:
• R. Stanton Hales, president of The College of Wooster in Wooster,
Ohio, and a 1964 graduate of Pomona College. Hales became
The College of Wooster's 10th president in 1996. He is also
a professor in the department of mathematics and computer
science. Before joining the faculty of The College of
Wooster,
Hales, who earned master's and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics
from Harvard University, joined the faculty of Pomona
College in 1967. Hales is also a national badminton
champion.
• Andrea Van de Kamp, senior vice president and chairman of
West Coast operations for Sotheby's auction house. A
graduate of Michigan State University and Columbia
University, Van de Kamp held administrative positions at
Columbia University, Dartmouth College and Occidental
College before becoming executive director of the Southern
California Coro Foundation. She has also served as director
of development for the L.A. Museum of Contemporary Art,
director of public affairs at Carter Hawley Hale, Inc. and
president of the Independent Colleges of Southern
California. Van de Kamp is also chairman emeritus for The
Music Center of Los Angeles County.
Cronkite, Hales and Van de Kamp will all receive honorary
degrees from Pomona College.
