New
Director Appointed to Pomona College Museum of Art |

Kathleen Stewart Howe has been named the Sarah Rempel and
Herbert S. Rempel '23 Director of the Pomona College Museum
of Art and Professor of Art History. The Museum is home to
fine art collections and the site of an active program of
temporary exhibitions throughout the academic year.
Howe is currently associate director and curator of prints
and photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum,
as well as an adjunct associate professor in the Department
of Art and Art History and co-chair of the Cultural Studies
Colloquium at the university. She has previously served at
the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and as a fellow of
the Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts at the
National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. She’s consulted
with the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on three exhibitions
that have traveled internationally, the most recent of
these, “First Seen: Portraits of the World’s People” will
open at the Dahesh Museum in New York, New York in February.
Howe is a prolific author whose books include First Seen:
Portraits of the World’s Peoples (2004), The Social Lens:
Photographs from the Ray Graham Collection (2003),
Excursions Along the Nile: The Photographic Discovery of
Ancient Egypt (1994), Revealing the Holy Land: The
Photographic Exploration of Palestine (1997) and Felix
Teynard: Calotypes of Egypt, a Catalogue Raisonne (1992),
the latter a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in
Photography. She has also authored numerous essays and
academic papers and lectured at museums throughout the
United States and Canada.
Howe received her bachelor of science degree in physics and
history from Michigan State University and her doctorate in
the history of photography with a minor in Pre-Columbian art
history from the University of New Mexico.
Howe will join Pomona College in July. She comes to Pomona
College from Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her husband,
Jerome Burstein M.D. She replaces former museum director
Marjorie Harth, who has retired after 23 years.
The Pomona College Museum of Art collects, preserves,
exhibits, and interprets works of art. The Museum, which is
open to the public, houses a substantial permanent
collection as well as serving as a gallery for the display
of temporary exhibitions. Important holdings include the
Kress Collection of 15th- and 16th-century Italian panel
paintings; more than 5,000 examples of Pre-Columbian to
20th-century American Indian art and artifacts, including
basketry, ceramics, and beadwork; and a large collection of
American and European prints, drawings, and photographs,
including works by Francisco de Goya, José Clemente Orozco,
and Rico Lebrun.
