Named to Board of Trustees of Pomona College |

Michael S. Segal and Sabrina May-Kar Ling have been elected
to the Board of Trustees of Pomona College, one of the
nation’s premier liberal arts colleges, at the Board’s May
meeting.
Michael Segal is president and chief executive officer of FS
Fred Segal where he oversees operations of the 40-year-old,
family-owned company that owns and operates property,
including Fred Segal Santa Monica, internationally known for
impeccable service and trend-setting fashion attracting
style-conscious customers, ambitious young stylists and
celebrities. Segal graduated cum laude with a degree in
sociology from Pomona College in 1979. He went on to earn a
master’s degree in theatre arts (motion picture/television
critical studies) at UCLA. While at Pomona College, Segal
was the social affairs director for ASPC and for Phi Delta,
a member of the water polo team, and participated in the
student exchange program with Colby College. Since
graduating from Pomona College, Segal has maintained strong
ties with the college and his classmates by serving on
several alumni boards and committees, including service as
chair of the Torchbearer Board, national chair for Annual
Giving 2001, co-chair for the 20th and the 25th Reunion Fund
committees. He also participates in Pomona College’s Career
Development Volunteer Program, through which groups of
Pomona College students tour the Fred Segal Santa Monica and
meet with store owners and buyers. Segal also is active in
other organizations, including serving as a trustee of
Harvard-Westlake School, a 7th- through 12th-grade
independent day school; as a director of Heal the Bay, a
nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to improving
Santa Monica Bay and educating more than 25,000 students
annually about water quality; and as president of the
Westside Breakers Soccer Club, which serves 175 female youth
athletes.
Sabrina May-Kar Ling has been elected to fill the position
of the young alumni trustee. Board by-laws require the Board
to maintain one member who has graduated from Pomona College
no more than seven years earlier at the time of election. A
corporate trainer with The Capital Group investment company,
Ling graduated cum laude from Pomona College in 2001 with a
degree in science, technology and society with an emphasis
in biology. As a student, Ling participated in the Pomona
College Internship Program as a health-care consulting
intern at Citrus Valley Health Partners and mentored middle-
and high-school students as part of Pomona Partners, a
college organization that brings students into local public
schools. She also was a Science, Technology and Society
Department liaison; manager of the student calling program
which raised funds for the school by calling potential
donors; chair of the Orientation Committee; a member of the
Senior Gift Committee; a Pomona College Tour Guide; and
spent a semester abroad studying in Madrid, Spain. Since
graduation, Ling has continued her fundraising for Pomona
College by serving as a Pomonathon caller and on the
Torchbearer Board, both of which are dedicated to raising
funds for the college. As an active community member, Ling
is a graduate of the Riordan Volunteer Leadership
Development Program, a 10-month program sponsored by the Los
Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce in which participants
receive training in how to be an effective member of a
non-profit board. During the program, Ling completed an
internship on the board of the Olive View-UCLA Medical
Center Foundation. In 2000, she was a leader at the
Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership, which
provides summer workshops and skill-building sessions to
raise awareness of public policies affecting Asian Pacifica
American populations and promote leadership in the
community, and was a Best Practices Intern for the National
Network for Youth, where she developed an HIV/AIDS
curriculum for teenagers to be used in organizations around
the country.
The Pomona College Board of Trustees is the governing board
of Pomona College and deals with academic, administrative
and fiscal matters. The 38-member board is national in
composition and represents most major sectors of society and
the economy. The members are elected to three-year terms.
Pomona College offers a comprehensive program in the arts,
humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Its
hallmarks include small classes, close relationships between
students and faculty, and a range of opportunities for
student research. Visit Pomona College on the web at
