Pomona
College has been included in Kaplan Publishing's The
Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting
Colleges, 2004 Edition. In addition to being profiled,
Pomona made the top 20 list of colleges where "drug-free and
alcohol-free activities and facilities are very popular
among students."
According to authors Trent Anderson and Seppy Basili, their
choices were influenced "by the inside information [they]
collect from guidance counselors and students, by
institutional data such as enrollment figures and
selectivity, and by current events at each college." After
selecting the schools, they surveyed current students,
recent graduates, and college officials to find out about
each college "from the inside." They also conducted a
scientific survey of high school guidance counselors around
the country.
The Guide notes the following about Pomona:
- "Offering a liberal arts education equal to the top
Northeast liberal arts schools, Pomona is located in
Southern California -- and that means palm trees and
sunshine. "
- "Pomona students get the best of both worlds: a small
campus community with all the resources of a large
research university."
- "With a student/faculty ratio of just 9:1, it's not
unusual to see students having dinner with their
professors. 'The professors are the best thing about
Pomona,' raves one senior. 'They're very easy to speak
with. There's lots of individualized instruction.'"
- "Students report that the workload is 'hard but
doable.' While the courses are demanding, these
students…seem to enjoy the challenge. "
- "You'll usually find students hanging around on the
lawns in the courtyards, barbecuing, or playing frisbee.
The retention rate proves just how satisfied students are
here: Well over 90 percent of freshmen return for their
sophomore year."
- "Pomona's 140-acre campus features ivy-covered
courtyards and gardens, and the Spanish style architecture
contributes to the school's Western look and feel… During
the week, the social life tends to stay on campus, while
big nights out in Los Angeles are saved for the weekend."
- "With superior academics, sunny weather, and a
motivated, friendly student body, there's plenty at Pomona
to call students westward."
- "Among the statistics offered, the Guide notes that
52% of Pomona students receive financial aid with the
average amount per student at $24,210."
- In their "final note," the authors suggest "If you're
a Star Trek fan, this might be the perfect school for you.
According to the Pomona website, the Borg vessels on Star
Trek: The Next Generation have an uncanny resemblance to a
certain labyrinthian dorm on campus. That's because one of
the Next Gen producers attended Pomona, where he lived in
Oldenborg dorm, which is laid out in a complex maze."
The Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most
Interesting Colleges, 2004 Edition also includes profiles of
Pomona's undergraduate partners in the Claremont Colleges
consortium, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer and
Scripps colleges. Other prominent college guides usually
published in August include those from U.S. News & World
Report and the Princeton Review. |
