Pomona
College Hosts Panel On the California Recall Election |
 |
On Tuesday, September 30, beginning at 4:15 p.m., the Pomona
College Politics Department will host a panel discussion on
"Recall Politics," covering the social, political and
economic forces explain the recall movement in California;
what issues will influence the outcome of the election; and
what are the longer-range implications for California.
The panelists are:
- Eleanor Brown, the James Irvine Professor of Economics
at Pomona College, is a distinguished researcher on
economic issues in the nonprofit sector and other social
spaces where resources are allocated in the absence of
profit maximization (e.g., the family, government). A 1975
graduate of Pomona, she is an award-winning teacher whose
portfolio includes a class on public finance.
- Jose Calderon, a professor in Sociology and Chicano
Studies at Pitzer College, has published widely on social
movements and campus-community partnerships. He is known
to his students and colleagues as a tireless advocate for
social justice. His numerous civic engagements include
leadership of the Latino Round Table of the East San
Gabriel Valley and the Pomona Valley.
- Kenneth Miller, an assistant professor of Government
at Claremont McKenna College, attended Harvard Law School,
following his 1985 graduation from Pomona, and entered
private practice with Morrison and Foerster, before
acquiring his doctorate in political science at UC
Berkeley. His research focuses on direct democracy -
initiative, referendum, recall.
The panel presentation is open to the public and will be
held in room 107 of the Carnegie Building (425 N. College
Avenue, Claremont). Refreshments follow the discussion.
