The Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations at Pomona Colleges is seeking an Assistant Director. The Center provides academic support to the foreign language and International Relations departments, hosts an international speaker series (IRC), operates a foreign language immersion hall for 135 students, and houses a foreign language dining hall. The assistant director should be dynamic individual who can work comfortably in a vibrant residential college setting with students, faculty, and staff from a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds. The ideal candidate will possess a background that combines experience in international education administration with foreign language training and teaching. Work collaboratively with the Oldenborg director, administrative assistant, six language residents, and Pomona College faculty, staff, and students to serve the campus community; work closely with the Foreign Language Resource Center and language faculty to coordinate language resident orientation and training and peer tutoring program; coordinate daily language tables, the International Relations Colloquium, and Oldenborg special events (language dinners, receptions); serve as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) of Pomona College’s Exchange Visitor Program (J visa) and as College liaison to International Place and the Claremont Consortium international student and scholar advisor group; coordinate selection process for incoming language residents and Oldenborg students; work closely with the administrative assistant to maintain website and monitor dining hall and programming (language tables and lecture series); work closely with six language residents to enable and supervise appropriate cultural activities with students; engage with Oldenborg and Pomona College faculty and students to promote the goals of the Oldenborg Center and encourage participation in Center activities. Occasional evening and weekend work required (special dinners, lectures and language resident airport pickup).

A Bachelor’s degree required in languages, international relations, or related field; master’s preferred; minimum of 3-5 years administrative experience in international education with supervisory experience; proficiency in at least one foreign language required (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, preferred); excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills as well as professional discretion in communicating with students and faculty; experience in coordinating workshops, orientations, colloquia, and event planning; experience in advising and mentoring students; excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with course management software and web design preferred; ability to multi-task and prioritize projects; strong intercultural communication skills.

Assistant Vice President & Director of Campus Planning & Maintenance

Under the guidance of the Vice President & Treasurer, the Assistant Vice President will lead the College’s ambitious facilities construction, renovation, and maintenance program. The Office of Campus Planning and Maintenance consists of five different departments: Planning, Maintenance, Grounds, Housekeeping, and Summer Conferences. These departments are responsible for new construction and renovation on campus; maintenance and repair of facilities; daily cleaning of all campus buildings; maintenance of the College’s landscaped areas and athletic fields; and coordination of on-campus conferences during summer months. This executive will be responsible for managing a $12 million operating budget and approximately 100 staff members. The ideal candidate will have at least ten years experience as a facilities officer with a proven record of accomplishment in positions of increasing responsibility. At least some of that experience will ideally have been in higher education. Candidates should also have demonstrated success managing major renovation and new construction projects in the context of ongoing operations and a need for active control of scope, budget, and schedule; managing Housekeeping and Grounds staff; and operating complex facilities in support of educational and/or research functions. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of all the technical components related to construction and renovation projects with the ability to interpret and translate this information to the board and other college constituents in a coherent fashion. This position also requires maintaining a high standard of customer service with the College community as well as a diplomatic and pragmatic leadership style. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

This is a new position that has been established to augment and educate faculty, students, and staff on the multiple resources available to address concerns about college policies and work-related issues. The Ombudsperson is expected to serve as an impartial and independent resource that provides a neutral and confidential mechanism for handling of complaints, conflicts, or any other disputes that arise outside of the traditional administrative avenues that currently exist. The Ombudsperson function is independent of existing administrative structures and will report directly to the President of the College.

Requirements for the position include evidence of excellent conflict resolution skills, sensitivity to diversity issues, knowledge about college organization and policies, and conversational ability in Spanish. The Ombudsperson must have outstanding communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization as well as with people of all cultures. He or she must keep information confidential and must use good judgment about when and how such information can be shared, while being mindful of maintaining professional standards that are consistent with the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of The Ombudsman Association, and the Ethical Principles of the University and College Ombuds Association. The position requires 5 to 10 years previous experience in an Ombuds or very similar role, a Bachelor’s degree, and demonstrated work experience with diverse communities and cultures. An advanced degree in a relevant discipline is highly desired.

The administrative assistant works collaboratively with the Oldenborg director, assistant director, six language residents, Foreign Language Resource Center (FLRC) manager, and FLRC intern to serve a broad constituency of campus students, faculty, and staff. The administrative assistant is responsible for general administrative duties and office management under the supervision of the Oldenborg Director. These duties include, but are not limited to, answering the phone(s); receiving/sorting department mail; maintaining office-supply inventory; maintaining office technology (audio-visual and other language resident supplies/equipment) managing day-to-day budget records and payment requests through the Business Office, including the department’s credit card accounts; maintaining and controlling confidential files and records; photocopying materials and/or processing materials electronically; arranging Oldenborg publicity; assisting with program events (language tables, lectures, special dinners); monitoring student payroll records for part-time work-study students; handling questions regarding building maintenance and housekeeping; maintaining attendance records on dining hall and language table/speaker events; assisting with orientation of language residents.

The position requires excellent people skills; the ability to relate information accurately and with diplomacy; professional discretion and courtesy are expected. Occasional evening and weekend work required (special dinners; language resident airport pickup; room draw). Familiarity with and/or mastery of a modern foreign language preferred. Familiarity with college or university work environments preferred. Must be familiar with menu-driven database systems and Windows system. Building Manager - Smith Campus Center (revised repeat posting)

Temporary, part-time, 10- to 12-month position. Hours may be between 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, and in eight-hour shifts between 9:00 and 2:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Building Managers will average 20 hours per week during the academic year. Managers are responsible for all operational aspects of the Campus Center during night and weekend hours in the absence of professional staff. Smith Campus Center houses two restaurants, the Coop Store, the Volunteer Center, Career Development Offices, Asian American Resource Center, Teaching and Learning Center, Offices of the Associated Students of Pomona College, a 200 seat theatre, a billiards and video game room, Edmunds Ballroom and numerous other meeting rooms and reservable spaces. Building Managers will report to the Assistant Director of the Campus Center. Successful applicants will be honest and dependable with a strong work ethic. Proven customer service skills, the ability to work within a diverse community, familiarity with Higher Education and a desire to work closely with students are required. Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and pass a functional capacity test. Must be able to work independently with little direct supervision. Duties will include, but are not limited to: acting as primary Facilities Manager and monitor all activities, reservations and programs during the designated hours of operation; locking and unlocking rooms in the facility as scheduled; clearing and securing the facility at closing; opening and closing facility on weekends; reporting any problems or concerns with the operation of the facility to the Associate Director; at all times ensuring the security of the facility and the safety of its occupants; working effectively with students, faculty and staff to ensure customer satisfaction; notifying Housekeeping and Maintenance staff of special needs; in the absence of professional staff, supervising Coop Store and Fountain Managers to ensure proper operation of all facilities; enforcing Pomona College and Campus Center policies; meeting with the Assistant Director of the Campus Center regularly; completing other duties as assigned.

On-Call Class B Driver - Smith Campus Center

Salary: $15.00 per hour
Will drive College-owned 25-passenger shuttle on an as-needed basis. Reports to the Assistant Director of the Smith Campus Center & Student Programs. Duties include: driving 25-passenger shuttle bus; servicing shuttle bus occasionally (gasoline, wash, etc.); performing related duties as assigned. Must be at least 21 years old, have a valid Class B Driver License with a Passenger Endorsement and have a driving record acceptable to the college’s automobile liability insurance carrier. Must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently enough to:  Converse with the general public; understand highway  traffic signs and signals in the English Language; respond to official inquires and make entries on reports and records.   Experience driving 25-passenger vehicle and working with college students preferred.

On-Call Models for Art Classes (revised repeat posting)
Salary:  $20.00 per hour
Occasional position with no guaranteed hours. The Art & Art History Department at Pomona College seeks persons interested in modeling for studio art classes.  Hours are variable and available from September through mid-May. The department is looking for a variety of body types for the purpose of modeling in the nude for studio art classes.  Prior experience is preferable but not necessary. The job requires the ability to maintain a professional attitude in the classroom, to take directions from the professor, to hold a pose for up to 20 minutes at a time, and to remain quiet while modeling. 

On-Call Building Attendant

Temporary, full- or part-time, occasional positions with no guaranteed hours.
Clean offices, conference rooms, classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, auditoriums, hallways, dorm rooms, kitchen areas (large and small), dining hall, college-owned homes, basketball courts, locker rooms, training rooms, and restrooms; change overhead burned-out light bulbs, be able to climb a ladder and perform cleaning tasks up to elevation of 10 feet from the floor, and be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted. Some knowledge of use of cleaning appliances or willingness to learn to operate custodial equipment is a must. Working hours will vary with shifts as early as 5:00 a.m., and as late as 4:00 p.m. or weekends. No guarantee of duration of work assignments. The successful candidate will be required to pass a functional capacity test and evaluation test. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Employment is contingent upon the satisfactory results of the aforementioned in addition to compliance with requirements cited in this posting.
