Assessing diversity at the College
With the help of a Campus Diversity Initiative grant from the James Irvine Foundation in 2001 and continuing with the President’s Advisory Committee on Diversity, the College has undertaken a more data-driven approach to cultivating a dynamically diverse campus community. The following framework provides a comprehensive focus to the College’s efforts and serves as a guide for managing and assessing diversity on campus.
 

Diversity Assessment Framework
 

A sample of data from selected studies informs the various dimensions of the assessment framework and highlights some of Pomona's ongoing efforts in its assessment of campus diversity.

I. Student Access and Success:  What are the demographics of our student body and to what extent are students of all backgrounds succeeding at Pomona?  Are all students actively engaged in campus opportunities that support success?

A. Enrollment, by Race/Ethnicity

B. Participation in high-impact learning activities

C. Student support:  Advising, mentoring, tutoring

D. Graduation Rates, by Race/Ethnicity

E. Doctorates Earned by Pomona Graduates (by Race/Ethnicity)

II. Climate and Intergroup Relations: What is the quality of experience and        interactions among various groups on campus?  To what extent do individuals from diverse backgrounds perceive a supportive, welcoming environment in which to work, learn and live?

A.  Campus Climate and Community for Students (Senior Surveys 2002-2006)

B. Climate and Community: Where do we go from here?  (July 2008 presentation to "Diversity at Pomona" workshop)

III. Education and Scholarship: How well are we preparing students to function in a pluralistic, global society?

IV. Institutional Vitality: How well positioned is the College to address the needs of a diverse society (in terms of its resources, structures, processes, etc)? How integrated is diversity into the mission, principles, policies and culture of the College?

C. Staff Demographics

D. President's Advisory Committee on Diversity
