POW! Sagehens Make a Difference
Sagehens will make a difference in October. Pomona alumni across the
country will participate in POW! (Pomona Outreach to the World) 2004, an
expansion of the national day of community service held annually. In
2003, about 100 Sagehens in six cities volunteered in their local
communities. Whether feeding the needy, planting a garden or building a
house, the Alumni Association has a project for volunteers. Students or
other friends of Sagehens are more than welcome. Contact the Alumni
Office at (909) 621-8110, or e-mail alumni@pomona.edu to get involved.
Calling All Alumni: Alumni Weekend, April 28-May 1, 2005
Alumni Sagehens are invited back to campus to relive their college days
and create new memories, possibly even make some new friends. This
year’s alumni symposium will be “Headlines and Deadlines: A Conversation
with Pomona’s Alumni Journalists.” The Office of Alumni Relations would
like to hear from alumni working in journalism or those who were
involved in the Student Life newspaper as a student. Sagehens who
graduated in classes ending in 5 or 0 are invited to make their hotel
reservations early. Classes of 1930-1980, call the Sheraton Fairplex
Suites at (888) 627-8074. Classes of 1985-2000, call the Sheraton
Ontario Airport at (800) 582-2946. If you’re interested in helping with
your class reunion or you’re an alumni journalist, contact the Alumni
Office at (909) 621-8110, or e-mail alumni@pomona.edu.
Honoring Those Who Shine
The Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the 2005
Distinguished Service Award and Inspirational Young Alumni Award. The
distinguished service award recognizes a graduate for selfless
commitment and longtime service to the College, not necessarily by
institutional means such as on the Alumni Association Board or Board of
Trustees. The young alumni award honors a graduate of the last decade
who has pursued his/her vision of the inscription on the Blaisdell
Gates: “They only are loyal to this College who departing, bear their
added riches in trust for mankind.” Please send names of nominees and
brief supporting statements to alumni@pomona.edu.
New-Generation Sagehens Come into Their Own
The Sagehen tradition is deeply rooted in many families. Twenty-nine
members of the Class of 2007 are the direct offspring of Sagehens from
the classes of 1958-1980. Their parents or grandparents paved the way
before them, but the students certainly plan to leave their own marks.
Continuing the Tradition: Twenty-five members of the Class of ’07 posed
for this photo in front of Seaver House: (front row) Forbes Lipschitz,
Corinna Cook, Julia Darcy Wold, Rachel Paterno-Mahler, Amy Van Buren,
Melissa Lockhart, Kathryn Poindexter and Michael Yoshizawa; (second row)
Sarah Rorick, Rebecca Holtz, Lauren Pedley and Lea Hartog; (third row)
Elyse Cooper-Smith, Carmela Guangorena, Anne Vleck, Stephanie Wesley,
Talley Starbird and Julia Fariss; (back row) David Fussell-Louie, Nick
Aase, Jake Bell, Jefferson Cowart, Daniel Wellman and Tim Thacher. |
