Family Tree

The Wig-Elgin-Vroman Family

The Pomona connection for the Wig-Elgin-Vroman family dates back to 1928. Helen Wig ’33 graduated from South Pasadena High School, and some of her friends were considering Pomona College. Her father, R.J. Wig, brought her to campus for an interview with the dean of women, and the two were hooked. Helen became a Sagehen, and R.J., who was a prominent businessman and trustee of Pasadena Presbyterian Church, was invited to become a trustee in 1929. Helen met James H. Elgin Jr. ’54 during her senior year. James’ mode of transportation in those days was a Good Humor wagon, in which he picked up Helen for their first date—the ice cream truck ringing as they drove. James delayed his education during the Depression and returned in the 1950s after he and Helen had five children. All five became Sagehens. Anna May Wig Hall (named after R.J.’s wife), the Wig Distinguished Professorship Awards and other college resources such as a student projects fund named in honor of the late David Elgin ’62 are all part of the family’s legacy.
