In the Arena
In a modern dance piece performed at the Pomona Spring Dance Concert,
two Pomona graduates—both science majors—explored the physical and
relational context of an arena.
“In the Arena,” Daniel Senning ’00 (below, left) and Jerrad Roberts ’01
(below, right) created their own movement vocabulary drawing from their
repertoire of athletics, ballroom dance, yoga and mime. (Maybe even
their biology and chemistry backgrounds?) This high energy, dynamic
piece was an original work composed collaboratively with Laurie Cameron,
artistic director of the dance program at Pomona College, to an original
score by David Vayo, a composer at Illinois
Wesleyan University. Both Roberts and Senning are dancers with Laurie
Cameron & Company and auditioned for the annual spring concert.
About 40 students and alumni from five of The Claremont Colleges
performed eight pieces reflecting a variety of styles, including ballet,
tap and modern dance, at Seaver Theatre. Artist in Residence Nicholas
Leichter also handled choreography |
