Honors / Wig Awards 2006
Tops in Students’ Minds

Pomona juniors and seniors elected (from left) Professor of Chemistry Wayne Steinmetz, Professor of History Samuel Yamashita, Assistant Professor of Economics Slavi Slavov, Associate Professor of Politics Pierre Englebert, Professor of Environmental Science and Geology Richard Hazlett and Associate Professor of Psychology Nicole Weekes (not pictured) to receive the 2006 Wig Distinguished Professor Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Established by Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Wig in 1955, this year’s awards were announced at Pomona’s 113th Commencement held on May 14, 2006. In a first, the 2006 Wig Committee also adopted a resolution commending English Professor Martha Andresen “for a lifetime of distinguished and extraordinary teaching.” Andresen, who came to Pomona in 1972 and retired this year, received the Wig Award every year for which she was eligible, a total of seven times.

Ambassadors of Song

In its first international tour in its more than 100-year history, the Pomona College Glee Club with conductor Donna Di Grazia, associate professor of music, made music throughout Germany and in the Czech Republic in May. The group pictured here at the Dom cathedral in Meissen, Germany, also gave performances at the Frauenkirche in Meiningen, Germany; the Nikolaikirche in Wettin, Germany (the performance raising nearly 1,000 Euros for the restoration of a 13th-century church); the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany; and at the Emauzy Monastery in Prague. “It is not a vacation, and it is not ‘just’ about music making,” said Di Grazia. “This tour offered us opportunities for serious outreach; opportunities to be international ambassadors of goodwill. … The educational impact of this experience was incredible.”
