Community Highlights
Fall 1999 saw lots of activity around the globe for Pomona alumni, family and friends. Here are some of the highlights of regional community events:
North Carolina (Southeast U.S.):
Despite wintry weather and icy roads, 18 alumni gathered in Durham, North Carolina, January 23, 2000, to kick off efforts to form a Southeast United States Regional Community. Hans Palmer, vice president and dean of the College, joined the group to present news about Pomona and to answer questions.
Boston:
More than 100 alumni, family and friends joined basketball fans in November to watch the World Champion San Antonio Spurs defeat the Boston Celtics. Celtics fans were aptly consoled when Spurs Head Coach and General Manager Gregg Popovich (former Pomona-Pitzer basketball coach) and Spurs Assistant Coach Mike Budenholzer '92 visited with the Pomona crowd after the game.
Washington, D.C.:
Young and old alike have joined together this fall to support local community efforts. Fit alumni ran in the Jingle Bell Fun Run to support the Arthritis Foundation, and 23 alumni and friends volunteered at the Capital Area Community Food Bank to sort donated food for D.C. shelters, youth and senior centers and emergency food programs.
Ohio:
Alumni and friends gathered in September to cheer on the Sagehens in Oberlin, Ohio. President Peter Stanley joined the Pomona 25-member group for a brunch before the celebrated football victory.
Santa Barbara:
Traveling by bus, alumni and friends from Santa Barbara enjoyed a day-long visit to the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles in September.
Sacramento:
In October, Sacramento alumni and friends warmly received Professor of History Sam Yamashita for his reading from the last letters and diaries of World War II Kamikaze pilots.
Bay Area Young Alumni:
In December, fourteen young alumni and friends took some time out from the holidays to help build two homes in Alameda with Habitat for Humanity. They worked on a little bit of everythinghauling trash, painting, installing siding, digging trenches and electrical work. The workday provided a great chance to get to know one another while giving back to the Bay Area community.
Phoenix:
Associate Dean and Professor of Art and Art History Frances Pohl lectured to alumni and friends on "The Monet at Giverny" exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum.
