Career Development: Shadow a Sagehen

First-hand exposure to a job or career field is one of the most valuable learning opportunities one can come upon in making career path choices. For Pomona students, alumni have been providing such opportunities through a new program, known as Shadow a Sagehen. Developed in conjunction with the Career Development Office’s Alumni Partnership Committee in 2002, the program offers alumni the chance to have students shadow them at work for as little as an hour or as long as an entire day over the winter break. Students have glimpsed a day in the life of a vintner, art director, deputy district attorney, emergency room physician and others. Participants gain insight for their own career exploration. Last year more than 80 students signed up with the CDO for Shadow a Sagehen. In some cases, making this connection even led to job opportunities for graduating seniors. For instance, after shadowing Penny Hunt ’83 in her offices at Northwestern University, Julia Patzelt ’03 was offered an internship upon graduation, eventually leading to a full-time job. Alumni have been excited to be in touch with current students and the College in a productive way.

Alumni@Pomona E-mail Newsletter

The Alumni Association recently created Alumni@Pomona, an electronic newsletter with links to the Pomona College Website as well as news about current events and faculty, student and alumni updates. Connecting Students to Alumni

To current Pomona students making their way towards graduation, the alumni years probably seem far off in the future. The Alumni Association endeavors to bring that far-off future into a realm a little more tangible for students who will soon become alumni. This fall, the Class of 2004 kicked off their senior year with a taste of the alumni “good life”—a party in Pomona’s alumni homebase, the Seaver House. Throughout the year, the Career Development Office connects students with alumni for internships and career advice. In addition, Winter Break Parties in regional communities across the nation offer students the opportunity to meet alumni from their hometowns during winter break. Alumni Board Update

The most recent meeting of the Alumni Association Board took place in October during the weekend of President David Oxtoby’s inauguration. Among the many projects of the Board, a recent topic has been that of diversity, both on campus and in the alumni population. Over the course of the year, Alumni Association President Juan Matute ’63 would like to define the mission of the alumni board in addressing this issue and work to put some programs in place that will reflect this mission long into the future.
