New Acquisition:
Means to an End: The impulse to draw--to make lines on a surface--has a history nearly as long as that of humankind. An apparently universal phenomenon, drawing is also our most common "art" experience, an activity engaged in spontaneously by virtually every child. Historically, drawings have been made for a multitude of reasons--to capture and record an event, experience, or image; to honor, invoke or placate a higher power; to teach; to explore and express ideas and feelings; to give pleasure; in inspire--and drawn images have taken an astonishing variety of forms, from informal sketches to highly finished, fully resolved compositions. This exhibition sets out to explore the medium of drawing and the motivations behind it by examining some of its more common purposes and manifestations. Organized by Marjorie Harth and Steve Comba, the exhibition is based on works from the Pomona College Collection, augmented by important loans from neighboring institutions.
Presented in collaboration with the Asian American Resource Center
Pomona Student Exhibition The annual Pomona Student Exhibition is open to all students enrolled in Studio Art classes at the College. Participation is competitive and work is juried by members of the Art Faculty. The resulting exhibition, which helps students learn to prepare their work to be shown publicly and allows them to see it in the context of a professional museum, reflects the high quality and exciting diversity of the Pomona College Studio Art program.
Pomona Student Exhibition All studio art majors, along with media studies majors concentrating in studio art, are required for graduation to undertake a final project culminating in exhibition. The graduating seniors, who are responsible for all aspects of the exhibition's organization and presentation, gain professional experience while giving the public an opportunity to view their work. The exhibition remains open through Commencement weekend. |
