Barbara Benish:
Hybrid Histories
January 18 - April 9

Throughout her career as an artist, Barbara Benish has tapped into the spirit of places---their history and appearance---and the issues of our time. She has worked with a variety of media---sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, poetry, music and performance---motivated by such wide-ranging interests as the critique of culture, issues of interpretation, historicism, feminism, myth, religion, and the recontextualization of art. This exhibition, organized by Rebecca McGrew, focuses on three of the most pervasive themes of the artist's work during the past two decades---Nature and Culture, The Apocalypse, and Ethnology. Along with finished pieces, it will include Benish's preparatory studies and working drawings, as well as original works by other artists who have influenced her.

One of Benish's primary interests is anthropology and, particularly, the relationship between contemporary Western society and other cultures. She has studied the rituals, mythologies, and histories of Native America and traditional Polynesia, as well as our own Catholic, Christian, and Jewish sub-cultures. Her work explores art history, particularly Northern European Gothic art and the "mystical roots" of knowledge; and the dichotomy between art and craft, the decorative and the domestic. In a variety of forms, it juxtaposes the irrational, emotional, body-centered attributes commonly associated with the feminine, with the rationality and control prized by our time. More...

Pomona Student Exhibition
April 25 - April 30

The annual Pomona Student Exhibition is open to all students enrolled in studio art classes at the College. Participation is competitive and work is juried by members of the Art faculty. The resulting exhibition, which helps students learn to prepare their work to be shown publicly and allows them to see it in the context of a professional gallery, reflects the high quality an exciting diversity of the Pomona College Studio Art program.

Pomona Senior Exhibition
May 6 - May 14

All studio art majors, along with media studies majors concentrating in studio art, are required for graduation to undertake a final project culminating in exhibition. The graduating seniors, who are responsible for all aspects of the exhibition's organization and presentation, gain professional experience while giving the public an opportunity to view their work. The exhibition remains open through Commencement weekend.
