Freckled Gyres:
Sculpture by Mowry Baden
January 20 - April 8

Mowry Baden is one of Pomona's most distinguished alumni in the arts. A member of the class of '58, he later served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Chair of the Pomona Art department (1968-69). A maker of objects whose interest lies in the physical and perceptual interaction between viewer and work of art, Baden constructs interactive pieces that incorporate bodily participation. Overlapping interests in sculpture, architecture, and social science reveal themselves in a concern with social and political, as well as artistic, issues.

This exhibition, curated by Rebecca McGrew, presented a selection of Baden's sculptural, "task-oriented" objects completed between 1969 and 2000, along with related drawings, sketches, and notes. The works included also explored the performative nature of the artist's work through a collaborative project with Pomona English Professor Steven C. Young. Two "transformative" sculptures Prone Gyres and Freckled Gyres, had two lives--as interactive sculptural objects during regular exhibition hours, and as central "props" for theatrical performances based on two short Sam Shepard plays as interpreted by Professor Young. Baden extensively modified both works for this occasion, which represented the first time any of his sculptures have been used in a public performance. More...

Project 9: Ashley Thorner
January 20 - February 25

Exploring the relationships between minimalist forms and excessive materials, Ashley Thorner's sculptures combine appealing pastel colors, glistening surfaces, and globular shapes. The artist presented new works that mimic pop candy forms taken to a toxic extreme. More...

Project 10: Anne Bray and Molly Cleator
March 10 - April 8

Focusing on concerns with community, self, and one's place in our mass-mediated society, Anne Bray and Molly Cleator collaborate on large-scale multimedia installations. Bray, a public and installation artist, and Cleator, a visual and performance artist, presented a new video installation that reclaims and recombined stereotypes and archetypes via image, sound, and text. Pomona Student Exhibition
April 17 - April 22

The annual Pomona Student Exhibition is open to all students enrolled in studio art classes at the College. Participation was competitive and work was juried by members of the Art faculty. The resulting exhibition, which helped students learn to prepare their work to be shown publicly and allowed them to see it in the context of a professional museum, reflected the high quality an exciting diversity of the Pomona College Studio Art program.

Pomona Senior Exhibition
May 2 - May 13

All studio art majors, along with media studies majors concentrating in studio art, are required for graduation to undertake a final project culminating in exhibition. The graduating seniors, who were responsible for all aspects of the exhibition's organization and presentation, gained professional experience while giving the public an opportunity to view their work.
