Pomona College Museum of Art Announces Multicultural Undergraduate Summer Internship
An internship is available for a student to work full-time at the Pomona College Museum of Art for a ten-week period between June and August 2010. The Getty internship is intended for members of groups currently under-represented in museums and the visual arts, particularly individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent.
The internship will include projects specifically focused on Collections Maintenance and Registration. Working with Museum staff, the intern’s responsibilities will include assisting the Assistant Director/Registrar in a variety of tasks related to collection care, including moving and rehousing of works on paper, photography of collections and database updating, and preparation of objects in the Native American Collection in anticipation of moving to new storage. Depending on the skills and interests of the intern, additional duties might include gallery and studio visits with the curator. Educational tasks may include writing didactic labels and preparing outreach programs. The intern will attend four events sponsored by the Getty Trust during the internship period and will be required to submit a detailed report at its conclusion.
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants are not required to have previous museum experience, but must be currently enrolled undergraduates who will have completed one semester of college by June 2010. Seniors may apply. Interns must be residents of, or attending college in, the Los Angeles area. Previous Pomona College Museum of Art Getty interns are not eligible for consideration. The internship carries a stipend of $3,500, which is subject to payroll taxes.
HOW TO APPLY: Interested students should submit 1) a resume and 2) a letter of application that explains why the internship is of interest, describes relevant study and/or experience, and lists the names, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references who may be contacted. These should be sent to Steve Comba, Assistant Director/Registrar, Pomona College Museum of Art, 333 College Way, Claremont, CA 91711-6344.
