Sophie Dowse '09 Awarded Rotary Scholarship for Study in Australia
Sophie Dowse, a resident of Moraga, has received a two-year Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship of $24,000 toward the costs of pursuing a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Melbourne.
A graduate of the Pomona College Class of 2009, Dowse majored in psychology and minored in sociology. Her thesis examined a technique for increasing happiness in individuals. During her junior year, she studies abroad at the University of Melbourne.
“I was fortunate enough to take a class within their Social Work program, further convincing me that Social Work was what I wanted to study and Melbourne was where I wanted to be,” says Dowse.
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program was founded in 1947 and will end in July 2009.
Pomona College, located in Claremont, CA, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges, is known for small classes, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of opportunities for student research. In 2009, it was named to the “Best Value” college lists of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine and Princeton Review.
