"Stuff White People Like" Blogger Christian Lander to Speak at Pomona College
Christian Lander, blogger at the enormously popular Stuff White People Like Web site, will speak at Pomona College on Thursday, September 17 at 7 p.m., on issues of racial stereotypes, political incorrectness and humor in new media.
The irreverent list of Stuff White People Like includes over 100 items, such as “hummus,” “standing still at concerts,” “having two last names” and “making you feel bad about not going outside.” Lander will discuss humor’s role in serious discussions of race, and whether stereotypes and political incorrectness belong in such conversations. Lander will explore how the rise of new media, such as blogs, has changed the dialogue, or whether there is a larger generational shift in mindset that is responsible.
Lander’s widely praised book, Stuff White People Like: A Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions (2008), according to the New York Daily News, serves as “a handy reference guide with which you can check just how white you are. Hint: If you like only documentaries and think your child is gifted, you glow in the dark, buddy.”
This event will be held in Pomona College’s Rose Hills Theatre (Smith Campus Center, 170 E. 6th Street, Claremont) and is sponsored by the Pomona Student Union. For further information, call (909) 621-8514 or visit www.pomonasu.com.
