The dance department was recently honored with a visit from one of the most revered and celebrated dance companies in the nation, The Martha Graham Dance Company. The contemporary company was in residency at Pomona College for three days, February 27 to March 1, providing students with a choreography workshop and access to open rehearsals. The visit culminated in a free performance of works from the 1920s and 1930s, including a dance by 26 students from the Claremont Colleges. The performance was open to the community and attracted a full house at Bridges Auditorium.
The students performed Panorama, a social-protest work that was choreographed by Martha Graham in 1935. They have working on the dance since last October with restager David Zurak, a former Martha Graham Company member. During the residency, Senior Artistic Associate Denise Vale also coached the students during an open rehearsal.
