Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company Takes 2nd at Nationals; Performing Tomorrow at Intercollegiate Showdown
The Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company is headed for a showdown tomorrow with several other collegiate teams in Rains Center. The event runs from 9 a.m. through after 10 p.m., is open to the public and costs $5 to attend. Attendees may come and go during the long day, which includes American Smooth, International Standard, American Rhytym, International Latin and Nightclub dance sections. More than 120 dancers will perform in the event, and Claremont dancers will compete against performers from Arizona State University, UC San Diego and others.
This event is just one in a weekend of dance. Tonight, the company is holding its annual Black and White Ball at the Platt Campus Center at Harvey Mudd College, and before the event, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges will compete at 9 p.m. in the “Dancing with the Claremont Stars” competition. The audience will choose the winner.
The CCBDC continually ranks as one of the top collegiate ballroom dance groups in the nation. In October, the team came in second at the USA Dance National Collegiate DanceSport Championship. Director Paul Roach notes that the winning team, Utah Valley University, competes at the world championships annually and has multiple coaches and fields multiple competitive teams. "We did take one mark from them however!" says Roach. He also notes that four students placed very well in individual events: Max Kukartsev HMC '13 and Darina Kostadinova SC '12 took second in the polka, and Toby Hammett '12 and LeeAnn Allen SC '12 took third in the Argentine Tango.
