The Sagehen Report for September 24

Charlotte Fisken '14 wins a header in the Women’s Soccer home game against Whittier on Saturday.

It was a bit of a quiet week for Sagehen Athletics, as the Pomona-Pitzer Football and Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams were all idle, leaving only four of the seven fall sports in action. The rest did come at a key time for those teams, as football opens SCIAC play this Saturday at defending league champion Cal Lutheran, while the cross country teams host the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday morning.

Volleyball was the busiest team this week, as the Sagehens picked up a thrilling five-game win over Whittier on Tuesday, before dropping 3-1 decisions to the two teams tied for first place in the SCIAC (Cal Lutheran on Friday, and Chapman on Saturday). The Whittier match was tied 11-11 in the fifth, when Pomona-Pitzer came up big by taking the final four points in a row to secure the win. Maria Weyhrauch ’15 and Kirea Mazzolini ’15 had back-to-back kills to start the run, and then combined for a block to make the score 14-11. Michelle Schultz ’16 then finished off the match with a clutch kill.

Ellen Yamasaki PI ’15 led the way for the Sagehens with 15 kills in the Whittier win, while Samantha Cahill ’15 added 13 and Schultz chipped in with 12. Pomona-Pitzer is at Occidental on Tuesday before returning home to face Redlands on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Men’s Water Polo finished off its daunting September schedule with a 13-7 loss to No. 10 Loyola Marymount. The Sagehens are now 0-11 on the season, with all 11 losses coming to teams ranked in the top 20 in the nation, including seven in the top 10. Ryan Higgins ’14 and Clayton Hardman ‘15 had two goals apiece in the Loyola Marymount loss to lead the Pomona-Pitzer offense. The Sagehens were also profiled in the Daily Bulletin for their tough schedule, which has included two matches against No. 1 USC and one against No. 2 UCLA so far this year.

Women’s Soccer had some unfortunate luck allowing goals in the final minutes of the first half in two games this week, as it fell 2-0 to defending champion Cal Lutheran and 1-0 to Whittier. The Regals scored with just under two minutes left in the first half on Wednesday to take a 2-0 lead into the break, while Whittier scored the game’s only goal with 45 seconds left in the first half on Saturday. The Sagehens have an important week as they try to get back into SCIAC contention, facing road games at Occidental on Wednesday and Redlands on Saturday.

Men’s Soccer also suffered through a tough week as it fell in a non-league game to UC Santa Cruz on Tuesday 1-0 and then dropped a road game at Whittier on Saturday 6-2. Nathan Shekita ’15 and Lawrence McDonald PI ’15 scored for the Sagehens against Whittier, creating a five-way tie for first place on the team with two goals (along with Danny Nasry ’13, Drew Lind PI ’14 and Guy Thyer ’16). Pomona-Pitzer has a busy week ahead with three home games, beginning with first-place Redlands on Monday, followed by Occidental on Wednesday and Caltech on Saturday.

Although the primary season for Men’s and Women’s Tennis will be in the spring, both teams will take place in their big fall event at the ITA West Regionals this Friday-Sunday, which will be held at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The ITA fall tournament is used to help set national rankings and seedings before the spring season begins.
