This week in Sagehen Athletics saw the SCIAC season get underway for all four winter sports, with Men’s Basketball and both Swimming & Diving teams opening up their league slate with home wins over Chapman.

Men’s Basketball was the first to get the SCIAC season started on Wednesday, and the Sagehens used a stifling first-half defense to hold Chapman to 13 points and held on for a 60-54 win at Voelkel Gymnasium. Kyle McAndrews ’15 led the Sagehens in scoring with 14 points, while Harrison Green ’13 had all 11 of his points in the second half (on 3-3 shooting from three-point territory and 2-2 shooting at the foul line) to keep the Chapman comeback effort at bay. Pomona-Pitzer fell to 1-1 in the SCIAC with a tough 81-72 loss at Redlands, despite placing five players in double figures, led by McAndrews with 14 and Jake Klewer ’14 with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

The Men’s Swimming & Diving team rolled to an easy 182-53 win over Chapman on Saturday, while the Women’s Swimming & Diving team also coasted to a 180-115 win. Combined, Pomona-Pitzer won 23 of 30 events and received contributions from its whole roster, as 19 different Sagehens earned first-place finishes in individual events (17 swimmers, two divers).

For the Men’s Swimming & Diving team, Hugh Berryman ’15 took home two individual titles in the 100 back and the 100 free, while Tommy DePaoli ’13 won the 200 fly and the 200 IM. On the women’s side, nine different swimmers accounted for the team’s 10 individual titles, with Ellena Basada ’16 the only dual winner, finishing first in the 200 back and the 200 IM. Charlotte Dohrn ’13 had arguably the most impressive individual win, capturing the 200 butterfly by half a pool length (15 seconds). Both teams will be idle for the holiday break until resuming competition in the first week in January.

The Women’s Basketball team started out the conference season 0-2 with losses to Chapman and Redlands (both of whom are undefeated so far this year). The Sagehens received a lift from a pair of freshmen who missed the first two games, as Jenn Okonkwo ’16 had 11 points in both the Chapman and Redlands games, while Juliah Shay Kim ’16 tied Okonkwo for team-high honors with 11 points at Redlands. Ruthie Shapiro PI ’15 led the Sagehens with 12 points against Chapman.
