This week in Pomona-Pitzer Athletics saw the Sagehens get 2013 off to a sensational start, as the four winter sports combined to go a perfect 6-0, including the first two wins of the year for the Women's Basketball team and an historic win for the Men's Basketball squad.

Women's Basketball had a very difficult schedule in November and December, but took advantage of the fresh start with the new calendar year by picking up a pair of league wins, defeating Whittier 54-48 on Thursday and edging Caltech 48-43 on Saturday. Alexis Sones '13 led the Sagehens with 17 points against Whittier, but missed the Caltech game due to illness. Jenn Okonkwo '16 stepped up with 14 points and 15 rebounds against the Beavers in the narrow win, after also tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds against Whittier on Thursday, giving her double-doubles in both games.

The Men's Basketball team, meanwhile, played a non-conference game against Biola on Wednesday, a team that it had lost to in each of the last 18 years. In fact, the Sagehens hadn't beaten the Eagles since the 1960s, as the series was halted and did not resume again until the two teams started playing each other every year beginning in 1994-95. This time around, though, Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 29-11 first half lead and held off Biola in the second half for a 70-62 win. Kyle McAndrews '15 led the way with 20 points on 7-9 shooting, and Jake Klewer '14 pulled down 11 rebounds. The Sagehens then coasted past Caltech on Saturday 75-52, as John Weiss '14 had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the way.

The Swimming/Diving teams capped off the perfect week by sweeping Whittier on Saturday, with the women winning 201-69 and the men winning 180-80. On the women's side, defending SCIAC Champion Alex Lincoln '14 returned after spending the fall semester abroad and won both of her races, earning victories in the 50 and 200 free. Mari Pettibone PI '15 swept the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events with times of 1:10.00 and 2:32.38, respectively. Ellena Basada ‘16 finished first in the 200 back (2:15.56) and the 200 IM (2:15.52), and Chrisi Morrison ‘16 swept the butterfly events, winning the 100 in 1:01.24 and the 200 in 2:15.29.

On the men's side, Tommy DePaoli '13 was a part of four wins, earning individual  victories in the 100 fly (54:19), 200 fly (2:03.56), and the 200 IM (2:07.66), while also contributing to a relay win. Hugh Berryman '15 swept the sprints (50 free, 100 free) in two close races, and was a part of two relay wins. Andy Wright PI ‘16 won both distance events, earning the 1650 free in 17:20, and then taking first place in the 500 free in 5:03.39.

The coming week will see a full Saturday of home events as the swim teams host a tri-meet with Occidental and La Verne at 11 a.m., and the basketball teams host a doubleheader against Occidental at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Women's Basketball also has a non-conference home game with La Sierra on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. All of the home events will have live video at
