This week in Pomona-Pitzer Athletics saw the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams and the Women’s Swimming team split their meets to set up big match-ups at CMS, while the coming week will see the spring season officially get underway with Women’s Water Polo traveling to the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.

Men’s Basketball had two down-to-the-wire games, coming up on the short end at Whittier on Wednesday 61-58 after leading with 14 seconds left, and bouncing back to defeat La Verne 70-66 on Saturday. Jake Klewer ’14 had a huge performance with 19 points and 13 rebounds and several big plays down the stretch in the win over La Verne, scoring eight straight Sagehen points in the final 2:06 to turn a 62-60 deficit into a 68-64 lead before a late exchange of foul shots ended the scoring.

Klewer hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 2:06 left with La Verne leading by two, just his fourth three-pointer of the year, then added a defensive rebound in traffic, a dunk off a backdoor feed from John Weiss ’14, a steal and three foul shots to will Pomona-Pitzer to the win. Weiss also had a terrific all-around game with 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists and six steals, while Michael Cohen ’15 added 13 points on 4-5 shooting from the floor.

The Women’s Basketball team had a clutch performance of its own from Alice Timken ’16, who had 14 points in a road win at Whittier on Thursday. Timken came into the game with 12 points all season, but shot 4-5 from the floor and 6-9 from the line. After Whittier rallied to cut a 19-point deficit down to four (53-49) with four minutes to go, Timken scored six straight Sagehen points on the next three possessions to stem the rally and send Pomona-Pitzer on its way to a 66-61 win.

The Sagehens then faced La Verne on Saturday and fell on the short end of a track meet, as the Leopards used their up-and-down style to pull away for a 108-75 win. Pomona-Pitzer had six players in double figures, led  by 17 from Vanessa Ho ’13, but La Verne took 112 shots, including 80 three-pointers, and wore the Sagehens down. Jenn Okonkwo ’16 had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Ruthie Shapiro PI ’15 had 10 points and 10 rebounds as Pomona-Pitzer had two players with double-doubles, which was almost three, as Juliah Shay Kim ’16 had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Both basketball teams cross Sixth Street to meet CMS this week, with the men battling the Stags on Wednesday and the women facing the Athenas on Thursday. The Sagehens then host a doubleheader with Redlands on Saturday, with the women playing at 5, and the men at 7.

The Swimming and Diving teams had two home meets, as Division II Simon Fraser visited from Canada on Friday and Redlands came to Haldeman Pool on Saturday. Simon Fraser swept both genders, while the Redlands meet resulted in a split, with Pomona-Pitzer earning a convincing win on the women’s side Jackie Tran ’15 was the lone women’s Sagehen to sweep her event, as the earned wins in the 100 back against both Simon Fraser and Redlands. Hugh Berryman ’15 also swept an event on the men’s side, winning the 50 free in both meets.

The teams also honored their seniors before the Redlands meet, and several of them produced quality swims in their final events at Haldeman Pool. Sarah Tuggy ’13 had a thrilling win in the 200-yard breaststroke, as she rallied from a one-second deficit over the final 50 yards. Charlotte Dohrn ’13 had a couple of second-place finishes in the butterfly on the women’s side, while Tommy DePaoli ’13 had close races in the butterfly events on the men’s side. Sam Corfman ’13 also had a strong race in the 100 fly, finishing fourth to give the Sagehens three of the top four spots in that race.

The Sagehen Swimming and Diving teams will also cross the street this week to face CMS on Saturday. They won’t be the only Sagehens in the pool this week, as the Women’s Water Polo team opens its spring campaign at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational on Sunday.
