It was a tough week for wins and losses in Pomona-Pitzer Athletics, but several strong performances give the Sagehens optimism for a promising future.

Highlighting the week was the near-upset that the Women’s Swimming and Diving team pulled off at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Sagehens have not won a dual with CMS in over 10 years, and were one year removed from being dominated by the Athenas, as Alex Lincoln ’14 was the only swimmer to win an event in last season’s meet.

This year, Lincoln was again successful, winning both of her individual events, but plenty of teammates joined her as CMS barely had enough to capture a 152-146. Pomona-Pitzer swept both relays, with Mia Hahn ’16, Hannah Robertson ’15, Jackie Tran ’15 and Lincoln winning the medley relay, and Jenna Haufler ’16, Vicky Gyorffy ’15, Johanna Rayl ’16 and Lincoln dominating the freestyle relay by almost five seconds.

Hahn also led a 1-2-3 finish for the Sagehens in the 100 back, breaking the one-minute mark to win in 59.79, followed by Tran and Ellana Basada ’16 in second and third. Basada and Hahn also finished 1-2 in the 200 back, while Gyorffy won the 200 free and Dawn Barlow PI ’16 won the one-meter diving event.

The race was essentially won by just five-hundredths of a second, as Mari Pettibone PI ’15 finished just .05 out of first in the 100-yard breaststroke. Had the final push to the wall gone the other way, the Sagehens would have won 152-146. The narrow loss sets up an exciting showdown in the SCIAC Championships, as Pomona-Pitzer could capture the league title with dual wins over Caltech and Cal Lutheran this weekend, and a first-place finish at the SCIACs.

Men’s Basketball also had a rough week on paper, falling at CMS 65-58 in the first half of the Sixth Street Rivalry (rematch at Voelkel Gymnasium is Feb. 13) and then losing at home in overtime to first-place Redlands on Saturday. However, the Sagehens got a lift against Redlands from Joe Knight PI ’16, who played in his first game of the season after missing time with injury/illness, and provided another post presence (five points and two rebounds in seven minutes) to give the team another weapon coming down the homestretch of the season. Jake Klewer ’14 had 18 points and 16 rebounds in the Redlands loss, while Kyle McAndrews ’15 had 22 points at CMS.

Women’s Water Polo got its season started as it looks to defend its SCIAC title to go back to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row and fifth time in the last eight years. The Sagehens started off with tough competition, facing two ranked Division I teams at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite, falling 19-7 to No. 17 Cal State Northridge and 15-7 to No. 15 UC Santa Barbara. Alyssa Woodward PI ’15 had a big weekend with seven goals in the two matches, while Sarah Westcott ’15 added five (four against UC Santa Barbara) and Katy Schaefer had a pair of goals against Northridge.

Women’s Basketball fell in its two games as its injury-depleted roster left them down to eight players, falling at CMS and home to Redlands. Alexis Sones ’13 combined for 25 points in the two games on 5-7 shooting from three-point territory, and Jenn Okonkwo ’16 continued her strong rookie season with a combined 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Another spring sport gets underway this weekend, as the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team opens at home against Vanguard on Saturday at 12 noon. The Sagehens are coming off a school-record 22-win season and have a talented nucleus returning, led by All-Region outfielder Leah Bleichner ’15 and All-SCIAC pitcher Fiona Riley ’15. The Baseball team, meanwhile, will host its annual Alumni Day game on Saturday at 1 p.m., before opening the season next weekend.
